Maria Filippakopoulou was born in Athens, Greece. She studied painting and photography at the Athens School of Fine Arts, as well as German Language at the University of Athens. She also studied at the Drama School of the National Theatre of Greece and at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Apart from her solo exhibition at Skoufa Gallery in Athens in 2010, Filippakopoulou has participated in various group exhibitions in Greece and her works can be found both in private collections and museums in Greece and abroad. Nowadays she is an Arts teacher in a school in Athens.
Filippakopoulou’s approach is clean-cut, almost abstract. Her work often charts the relationship of human beings with space, both urban and natural. Where figures are present, they are by no means dominant, as her concern is their place in their surroundings, their link to or their distance from them.
