Julia Beatrice How

English, 1867 - 1932

She was born in Devon, England, studied in London and then was accepted to attend the Académie Delecluse in Paris. Influenced by Lucien Simon and Eugene Carrière, How spent the largest part of her life in France, at her studio in Etaples and exhibited her works at Paris Salons, as well as at the galleries of Georges Petit and Armand Drouant. She had never married, yet she concentrated in simple, everyday subjects depicting mostly mothers with infants and still lives.

Her fragile technique and the masterly handling of the lowest tones give so much vitality to her paintings that they seem almost transparent.
