A typical and very remarkable example of Italian painting of the mid-19th century. The effort to render the movement of the clouds in the sky and the simple, daily theme integrated in a classical-like environment bear similarities to the short-lived movement of the macchiaioli. The macchiaioli painters were active in Florence for a brief period of time and despite the fact that their painting shares many common elements with impressionism, they preceded the impressionists in time.
