Originating from a large family of artists based in the Netherlands in the 19^th century, Hermanus Koekkoek painted mainly seascapes and coastal landscapes. His painting is characterized by the frequent integration of human figures into the painting surface, human figures small, yet particularly detailed in their depiction. His work belongs to the long tradition of Dutch landscape art, which flourished during that era. His works are included in the collections of many European museums.
