Heroes and kings, fearless warriors of freedom. They’re all here, their garments roaring once again under the Greek sun, out of their display cabinets and storage trunks after 200 years of silence, to breathe, stretch and reclaim their soul. Sleeves, crumpled here and there, in all the familiar places. Belts tightened around warm flesh, vests holding backbones straight, proud and erect, once again. Their fabric rests comfortably over pulsating hearts, left to the kind and clear gaze of Vangelis Kyris, and the tender and instinctive touch of Anatoli Georgiev.

Honoring the treasure entrusted to him by the National Historical Museum to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821, the photographer carefully focuses, through his lens, on the artistic Renaissance that the Greek people never had the opportunity to experience. A Renaissance that, even though inspired by Greece’s culture, never came to pass. The artist takes back his land’s lost legacy through majestic frames, dramatically lit on dark backgrounds, and a perspective that turns the clothes as well as the history behind them into the protagonists, in images that, so complex in their design, wonderful in their execution.

Lovingly guarded in display cases and wooden chests filled with lavender, shirts, aprons and long vests have waited patiently that is until now, to sit on bridal trunks and to be photographed, worn by a new generation of Greeks. A small, fleeting touch of anarchy lurks in a handkerchief dropped on a back, a shirt left unbuttoned. After completing their journey through space and time, with their 2019 exhibition A Voyage Within, the two artists now travel linearly, from the past to the future, aboard the present tense. For they already know the answer: The past has a future.

Anatoli Georgiev leans over the canvas to feel the soothing, two-dimensional trace left behind by Vangelis Kyris’ camera, to bring back to life the loving care placed in every stitch of the garments created by the master gold-embroiderers and multi-talented housewives of bygone times. This is a journey of discovery that takes Georgiev back to the greatness of a soul that, despite the difficult years of the Ottoman rule, did not stop anywhere. With his needle, the artist pierces through the past to trace the path of the thread through symbols of faith and protection on collars, sleeves and hemlines, symbols that mimic nature itself, in garments that speak of love, power, wealth and the soul, with a thread that never ends, with a knowledge that never stops.

His stitches run through the canvas to meet the shadows created by the photographer, in a choreography between boundaries and light, this is a lively creative dialogue between two artists that never ceases: It is simply completed on every image, in order to compose the third dimension that is here to remind us that the hidden source from which the visible arises is always one level higher than what meets the eye. Brand new, gold colored thread reflects beams of light, while the red thread almost resembles a needle dipped into a wound. As they age, these threads too will carry the debt of their own chapter in the narrative of the garments, the works of art you see right in front of you today will also grow old; the stitches will wear out, like the thread of an ancient but immortal soul bearing its story again and again.

영웅과 왕, 자유를 위해 싸운 용감한 장수들이 여기 다 모였다. 200년의 침묵을 깨고 그들의 의복은 진열장과 저장소에서 나와 그리스 햇빛 아래 숨쉬고 영혼을 되찾는다. 여기저기 익숙하게 주름 잡힌 소매. 따뜻한 몸에 두른 허리띠, 척추를 곧게 받쳐주는 조끼. 반겔리스 키리스의 친절하고 맑은 시선과 아나톨리 게오르기에프의 부드럽고 본능적인 손길을 거쳐 직물은 두근거리는 심장 위에 편안히 놓여있다.

국립역사박물관이 작가들에게 위탁한 귀중한 보물을 찬양하며 1821년 그리스독립전쟁 200주년을 기념한다. 사진작가는 카메라 렌즈를 통해 예술 르네상스에 신중히 집중한다. 그 르네상스는 그리스 문화로부터 영감을 받았지만 그리스인들은 경험해 보지 못했다. 작가는 어두운 배경에 극적으로 비친 장엄한 사진 그리고 옷과 그 옷의 역사를 초점으로 만드는 관점을 통해 나라가 잃어버렸던 유산을 되돌린다. 그 결과는 복합 디자인뿐만 아니라 놀라운 사진이다.

라벤더로 가득 찬 진열장과 나무 몸통에 사랑스럽게 보호되어 있었던 셔츠, 앞치마와 긴 조끼는 신세대 그리스인이 입어서 사진 찍힐 때까지 오랫동안 기다려 왔다. 어깨에 놓은 손수건과 단추를 채우지 않은 셔츠는 잠깐 동안 무질서의 느낌을 준다. 2019년 ‘A Voyage Within’ 전시로 시공간 여행을 마치고, 작가들은 이제 과거에서 미래를 향해 현재를 통해 계속해서 여행을 하고 있다. 왜냐하면 작가들은 대답을 이미 알고 있기 때문이다: 과거에는 미래가 있다.

아나톨리 게오르기에프는 정성 들여 반겔리스 키리스의 카메라에 담긴 잔잔한 2차원 흔적을 느끼고 옛날 자수 달인과 다재 다능한 주부들이 의복에 수놓은 한 땀 한 땀 자수가 갖는 애정 어린 관심을 되살렸다. 게오르기에프는 이 과정을 통해 그리스 영혼이 오스만 통치 아래 어려움을 견뎌 왔지만, 그대로 위대하게 번창했다는 사실을 알아냈다. 작가는 바늘을 가지고 과거를 연구한다. 칼라, 소매, 옷자락에 신앙과 보호를 상징하는 실을 추적했다. 그 상징들은 자연을 모방하고 사랑, 권력, 부와 영혼을 드러내는 의복을 완성한다. 실이 끊어지지 않는다. 지식에 끝이 없다. 

그가 놓은 바늘땀이 사진작가가 만든 그림자를 만나 경계와 빛의 안무를 창작한다. 두 작가 사이에 활발한 창작 대화는 끊이지 않으며 각 사진에 완성된다. 그들은 3차원을 만들어 관객한테 보이는 원천은 항상 눈에 보이는 것보다 한 단계 더 높다는 사실을 상기시켜준다. 새 금사는 빛을 반사하며 붉은 실은 상처에 담긴 바늘과 흡사하다. 시간이 흐르면 흐를수록 이 실도 의미가 깊어지고 가치가 높아질 것이다. 이 순간에 관객이 눈 앞에서 보는 작품도 세월이 흐르면 옛날의 것이 될 것이다. 옛날의 실이지만 사라지지 않은 영혼과 함께 이야기를 계속 전달하면서, 자수는 닳아질 것이다.
