KOURD HISTORY

History of Kourd Gallery
Since 2008, Kourd Gallery has maintained a contemporary exhibition space with a small outdoor garden in the centre of Athens, specifically at the foot of Lycabettus Hill, at 2 Kassianis Street. With the aim of showcasing the work of emerging Greek artists, highlighting key trends in contemporary art, and introducing significant artistic explorations from other countries and cultures, the gallery hosts both solo and thematic exhibitions.
Some of these exhibitions have focused on themes such as colour and abstraction, writing as a form of painting, materiality and the handmade, nature, landscape, portraiture, and animals. Painting, sculpture, mixed media, photography, installations, multimedia, as well as the coexistence or dialogue between two or more art forms, have all found a platform within the gallery.
The current owner is Haik Kourd-Kourdoglanian, while the gallery’s curator is Eleni Varopoulou, a theatre and art critic.
The historical origins of Kourd Gallery date back to the 19th century, when the family was active in Istanbul and Smyrna. There, the Kourdoglanians — collectors and antique dealers — were engaged in the trade of antiquities, antiques, and paintings until 1922. Key figures who inspired and shaped the gallery’s trajectory during the 20th century, as well as its shift towards Greek and European classical modernism, were Yeghia Ghazarossian and Zano Kourd- Kourdoglanian, the father of the current owner.
